How To Bulk Download Stock Data From Yahoo! Finance To Excel For Free

No investor is able to backtest their investment strategies if they don't have suitable data. This article focuses on how to bulk download data from Yahoo! Finance to Excel, all for free!

There are commercial options available that will accomplish a similar task such as DownloaderXL but that will set you back $50. Warren Buffett didn't get rich by throwing around cash for something he can do for free!

Peter Ponzo of gummy-stuff.org comes to the rescue with a great spreadsheet. The spreadsheet will download prices for up to 100 stocks automatically.

The instructions are included in the 'Explain' sheet within the spreadsheet file, but basically, all you have to do is edit the list of stocks in column K and click "Download All Stocks" There is also an option to just download a single stock's data, by putting the stock into cell B4 and you can customize the date range as required.

Just make sure that you have valid yahoo tickers for the stocks (sometimes different from Google finance and MSN finance).

It's actually really satisfying watching all the data download. You will need to enable macros when you open this file in order to download the data. Click here for a guide on how to do this.
